What is Kimi?

Kimi is the assistant from Moonshot AI, and the Chinese assistant that has invested most in long-document handling. Upload a few hundred thousand characters and ask questions, and it locates specific passages and connects information across chapters more reliably than most alternatives at this price. It is well suited to research summaries and working through reference material.

Its Chinese reads naturally, usually without needing the word order fixed afterwards. Web search works inside China, which makes it more practical for Chinese-language sources than international models that cannot reach domestic sites at all. The web version is free and reachable from mainland China without any additional setup.

The gap is in reasoning depth: multi-step derivations and problems needing a strict logical chain still fall short of the frontier models. Code is not its strength either — it is best treated as a helper for reading material and writing Chinese.

Key features

  • Long-document reading: Upload several PDFs, Word files and the like at once, then search and summarise across them.
  • Link reading: Paste a URL and it reads the page before answering.
  • Web search: Searches the Chinese-language web and cites source links in its answers.
  • Chinese writing: Rewriting, expanding, summarising and polishing with natural word order.
  • Multi-device: Web, mobile and desktop versions share the same conversation history.

How to use

  1. Go to kimi.com, or install the Kimi mobile app.
  2. Log in with a phone number or another supported account.
  3. Drag in the files you want processed, or paste a web link.
  4. Scope your questions where you can — “the cost discussion in chapter three” — for more precise answers.
  5. For current information, let it search the web, and open the sources to check the original text.

Best for

  • Literature reviews and research notes: read a large batch of files at once and group findings by theme.
  • Long reports, contracts and papers: find key passages and figures quickly.
  • Chinese-language search: more useful for domestic sources than international models.
  • Chinese writing: articles, reports and summaries where natural phrasing matters.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Reliable long-document handling and good at linking information across chapters.
  • Natural Chinese that rarely needs heavy editing.
  • Direct access in mainland China, free on the web, and web search that reaches domestic sites.

Limitations

  • Complex multi-step reasoning still trails the frontier models.
  • Not a strong coder; pick another model for programming work.
  • A relatively thin multimodal and tool ecosystem — it is mostly about reading and writing.
